Probably two of the most famous symbols of Japan, the Sakura or cherry blossom in English, and the horse. This tsuba is made of copper plated iron, with gold and silver gilding.
Sakura are the small, delicate pink flowers of the cherry blossom tree. The spring blooms are beautiful yet short lived.  Cherry blossoms represent the beauty, fragility and shortness of life. These qualities made them very important to the Samurai.  Of equal importance to the Samurai was the horse.  Horses along with the other animals depicted in the Japanese zodiac are common on the menuki.  The horse the symbol of beauty, strength and speed.
