The plum tress’ blooms were popular up until the Heian era when the cherry blossom came into popularity. The plum’s juices were used in medicines. The tree itself was thought to protect against evil so it would be planted in the northwest part of gardens or grave yards. Northwest is a direction that was thought that evil would come from. This tsuba is a lucky charm.
